Acid & Chemical Staining — Indoor & Outdoor Arizona Concrete
Greg Kaiser transforms plain concrete into rich, organic surfaces using Westcoat's SC staining system — low-VOC, water-based, blendable colors. No rinsing required. Designed for Arizona's indoor and outdoor concrete conditions.
Materials: Westcoat Professional Systems ↗1The Westcoat SC Staining System
Westcoat's SC (Surface Coat) staining line is water-based, low-VOC, and requires no rinsing after application — unlike traditional acid stains that leave reactive residue requiring neutralization and wash-down. The SC chemistry penetrates the concrete surface and permanently changes the color, creating the organic variation characteristic of quality stained concrete. Colors can be blended on-site for custom palettes unique to your space.
- Low-VOC water-based chemistry — minimal fumes during install
- No rinsing required after application — clean process
- Colors can be blended for custom multi-tone effects
- Penetrates the slab — won't peel or delaminate
- UV-resistant options for outdoor Arizona applications
- Works on existing concrete — no tear-out required
- Compatible with existing stamped or textured surfaces
- Revitalizes worn or faded decorative concrete

2Indoor & Outdoor Applications
Concrete staining works beautifully on interior floors — living rooms, kitchens, commercial lobbies, retail spaces. It's equally effective outdoors on patios, pool surrounds, driveways, and covered walkways. Arizona's UV intensity requires UV-stable topcoat sealers on exterior applications — we specify the right Westcoat topcoat for every surface and exposure level.
- Interior floors — living rooms, kitchens, basements, retail
- Exterior patios and outdoor entertainment areas
- Pool deck surrounds — anti-slip topcoat available
- Driveways and covered walkways
- Commercial lobbies and restaurant floors
- Revitalizing old or faded stamped concrete

Concrete Staining FAQs
Straight answers about Westcoat SC staining.
Q.What is concrete staining and how is it different from paint or coating?
Concrete staining penetrates the slab surface and chemically reacts with the concrete — it becomes part of the floor, not a layer sitting on top. This means it won't peel, chip, or delaminate. The color variation you see in stained concrete is inherent to the process — each slab absorbs stain slightly differently, creating the organic, natural aesthetic that makes stained concrete unique.
Q.What staining system does DnD use?
Greg uses Westcoat's SC (Surface Coat) staining system — low-VOC, water-based formulations that don't require rinsing after application. The water-based chemistry means lower fumes during installation, better color control, and the ability to blend colors for custom effects. The SC system is designed for both interior and exterior Arizona concrete.
Q.Can I stain my existing outdoor concrete — patio, driveway, pool deck?
Yes — existing outdoor concrete can be stained provided it's in acceptable condition and properly prepped. We assess the slab first. Previous sealers, paint, or coatings must be removed before staining. Greg grinds or profiles the surface as needed. Westcoat's SC system is UV-resistant and designed for exterior Arizona applications including pool deck surrounds.
Q.Can concrete stain colors be blended for custom effects?
Yes — the Westcoat SC system supports color blending, allowing us to create gradients, multi-tone effects, and site-specific custom palettes. This is one of the advantages of professional water-based staining over one-size-fits-all acid stain kits. Greg works with you on color selection and can show you samples on your actual slab before full application.
Q.What's the maintenance like for stained concrete?
Low. Stained concrete sealed with a Westcoat topcoat wipes clean with a damp mop and mild cleaner. No waxing. No special products. Outdoor installations benefit from re-sealing every few years depending on traffic and UV exposure. The stain itself doesn't need refreshing — only the topcoat layer if it wears down.
Q.How long does concrete staining take?
A standard residential interior (500–1,000 sq ft) typically takes 1–2 days including surface prep, stain application, drying time, and topcoat. Larger areas or complex multi-color designs take longer. Outdoor projects may be scheduled around weather to ensure dry cure conditions.
